Sunil Mihindukula, who wrote an article about Swarna Sri Bandara, used the title “The Doctor Who Loved the Bizarre Drama”.
Although an Ayurvedic physician, Swarna Sri was best known as a lyricist and radio broadcaster. In addition, he entered the Sinhala drama field by translating Samuel Beckett’s “End Game” [END GAME] into ‘Paraputuwo’.
I was also invited to write an article for a collection of essays about Swarna Sri that was to be published. “I have read the translation as Paraputu once again.”
What caught my attention here was that not only Swarna Sri, but even Sugathapala de Silva, who translated the play “Godo Enakal”, tried to provide a commentary on this play from a Buddhist philosophical perspective. It seems that there is some confusion here.
The origin of the absurd theater was the question of what is the meaning of life that arose among artists in Europe after the Second World War. They did not have a deep knowledge of Buddhist philosophy. Also, they rejected even God. They had the question of why a God would come to save man. It is up to the critics to see to what extent it is fair for someone like Swarna Sri Bandara, who is wise in Buddhist thought, to interpret Beckett’s play from his own perspective.

Machado’s Poetry
There are two Machados that I know. One is Malcolm Machado. He is a lawyer. A talented actor. Malcolm Machado gave a great performance in the film “Alboroda” created by Handagama based on Neruda’s life in Sri Lanka.
The other is Antonio Machado.
He is a world-famous Spanish poet. During the Spanish Civil War, Machado, deeply shocked by the killing of Garcia Loca, wrote the poem “Federico” which is still translated into various languages of the world today.
Facing the threats of the fascists, Machado decides to flee to France with his brother. They traveled by foot through a mountain range between France and Spain. A few days later, he died of a heart attack.
