COPA electric vehicle import probe referred to Attorney General

Parliament on Monday approved motions to refer reports submitted by the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) and the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) to the Attorney General and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for further action. Under Standing Order 119(4), Parliament approved referring to the Attorney General the COPA report on its inquiry into the scheme that allowed Sri Lankans employed overseas to import fully electric vehicles using foreign remittances. The inquiry examined the implementation of the scheme from May 1, 2022, to September 15, 2023, and sought the Attorney General’s observations and any necessary action. Parliament also approved, under Standing Order 120(4), the referral of matters identified in COPE reports to CIABOC for appropriate action. The reports relate to investigations into the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital Board, Land Reform Commission, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, Lanka Sathosa Limited, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, and the National Savings Bank.
