Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa has alleged that individuals who speak out against the government are being subjected to intimidation and pressure, claiming some have been “driven to suicide.” Addressing a divisional meeting in Dedigama, Kegalle on Saturday (18), Rajapaksa claimed that people who give statements against the government are allegedly threatened and pressured during questioning. “It seems to me that this is the period with the highest number of suicides. Some people who spoke against the government have been driven to take their own lives. Others are allegedly told during questioning that they too could end up taking their own lives,” he claimed. Rajapaksa called for investigations into such incidents while accusing the government of using intimidation and suppression against its critics. During his speech, he also criticised the government’s economic policies, tax measures, treatment of public servants and investors, and accused it of failing to fulfil promises made to the public.
