Police have launched an islandwide operation against passenger buses illegally operating on kerosene instead of diesel, following a surge in complaints about the practice, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Control and Road Safety W.P.J. Senadheera said. Speaking at a media briefing on Friday (17), DIG Senadheera said investigations carried out so far had identified around 100 buses suspected of using kerosene as fuel. He said legal action has already been initiated against several operators, while additional cases are being prepared as investigations continue. Fuel samples collected from a number of buses have been sent to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) for laboratory analysis, with further prosecutions to follow if the tests confirm the use of kerosene. DIG said all police stations have been instructed to continue inspections and take action against buses found operating with unauthorised fuel. He also called on fuel station owners to be alert to suspicious bulk purchases of kerosene and urged them not to sell the fuel for use in passenger buses. (Newswire)
