Samagi Lawyers’ Association to hold public event against threats to judicial independence

The Samagi Lawyers’ Association, affiliated with the Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), will host a public discussion tomorrow (19) highlighting concerns over attempts to undermine the independence of the judiciary. The forum will take place at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 07, beginning at 3:30 PM. The awareness programme is aimed at drawing public attention to several issues: proposals to extend the retirement age of High Court judges, the prolonged failure to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, and what organizers describe as threats posed by the executive to judicial independence.
