Sri Lanka’s year-on-year inflation, as measured by the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI), increased to 6.5% in June 2026, up from 5.4% recorded in May, according to the Department of Census and Statistics. The Department said food inflation rose to 3.3% in June from 1.5% a month earlier, while non-food inflation increased to 9.3% from 8.6%. The NCPI increased to 222.3 points in June from 218.8 in May, reflecting a monthly increase of 1.6%. Food items contributed 1.11 percentage points to the monthly increase, while non-food items contributed 0.49 percentage points. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food, energy and transport items, stood at 5.0% year-on-year in June, with a monthly increase of 0.8%. According to the Department, the general price level in June 2026 was 122.3% higher than the base year of 2021. The next NCPI release for July 2026 is scheduled for August 21. (Newswire)
