The Ministry of Health will officially inaugurate the Arogya Wellness Centres project tomorrow, establishing 1,000 centres across the country to strengthen primary healthcare and reduce hospital congestion through preventive services.

The Ministry of Health and Mass Media will formally launch the Arogya Wellness Centres initiative tomorrow under the leadership of Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. The first centre will be inaugurated in Kalutara South, with simultaneous district-level events scheduled across the country.

The project responds to persistent challenges within Sri Lanka's healthcare system, particularly overcrowding and extended waiting times at hospitals that limit meaningful patient-doctor interactions. According to the Health Ministry, these pressures have created a need for alternative service delivery models that prioritise early intervention and health promotion.

Each wellness centre will operate across multiple Grama Niladhari divisions, offering screening, health guidance, and preventive services rather than functioning as conventional dispensaries or outpatient clinics. The centres will employ a team consisting of a doctor, community nursing staff, and coordinating officers to deliver these services.

The initiative specifically targets non-communicable disease prevention and control while strengthening the country's primary healthcare framework. By shifting focus toward disease prevention and community-level health awareness, the project aims to enhance overall public health outcomes and reduce the burden on hospital facilities.
