Sri Lanka Police reported that 1,693 people have died in road accidents so far this year, with authorities noting a marginal decrease compared to the same period in 2025.

Sri Lanka has recorded 1,693 fatalities from road accidents through the current year, according to Sri Lanka Police. Deputy Inspector General W.P.J. Senadheera, who oversees the Traffic and Road Safety Range, disclosed these figures at a media briefing, noting that the statistics encompass 1,605 reported road accidents across the country.

The fatalities span multiple categories of road users. Pedestrians accounted for 555 deaths, while motorcyclists represented the largest group at 603 fatalities. The remaining deaths were distributed among pillion riders (119), cyclists (115), drivers (136), and passengers (162), according to police records.

Beyond fatal accidents, police documented a broader spectrum of traffic incidents. The year saw 3,125 serious accidents, 6,477 minor accidents, and 2,388 accidents resulting in property damage only. Despite these substantial figures, DIG Senadheera indicated that the overall number of road accidents recorded represents a modest decrease compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, suggesting potential improvements in road safety measures or enforcement.

These statistics underscore ongoing concerns about road safety in Sri Lanka, with motorcyclists and pedestrians continuing to face disproportionate risks on the nation's roads.
