A shipment of 10,000 railway tracks delayed by Middle East conflict disruptions has reached Colombo Port, with plans to rehabilitate the Coastal Railway Line over the next six months.
A consignment of 10,000 railway tracks arrived at Colombo Port on Sunday, August 23rd, ending a period of delay attributed to ongoing conflict in the Middle East region, according to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development. The cargo is currently being unloaded at the port facility.
Approximately half of the shipment will be utilized for rehabilitation efforts on the Coastal Railway Line, where speed restrictions are currently in effect. Authorities have identified nearly 50 locations between Colombo Fort and Panadura requiring track replacement. The entire rehabilitation project is projected to span approximately six months upon commencement.
The Sri Lankan government has committed Rs. 2,000 million in domestic funding toward the acquisition of these railway tracks. Beyond track replacement, rehabilitation work will include the construction and repair of railway bridges running alongside the line, representing a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade initiative.
Once completed, the rehabilitation efforts are anticipated to substantially mitigate the chronic delays that currently plague daily train operations on the Coastal Railway Line, potentially improving service reliability and travel times for commuters and freight operations along this critical transport corridor.
