Dengue cases in Sri Lanka have climbed beyond 53,000 this year, with health authorities warning of an alarming surge during June’s rainy conditions. According to the National Dengue Control Unit, 19,318 patients were reported in June alone, pushing the cumulative total to 53,159 cases by the 25th week of 2026. The outbreak has claimed 31 lives so far. Officials noted that monthly case numbers remained below 10,000 during the first five months of the year, but June’s figures mark a sharp escalation. The Western Province has recorded the highest burden, with 27,833 patients, accounting for 52.36% of the national tally. In total, 124 Medical Officer of Health divisions have been designated high‑risk zones. Health authorities are urging the public to intensify efforts to keep surroundings clean, eliminate mosquito breeding sites, and destroy larvae and pupae to curb transmission. (Newswire)
