When a 16-year-old boy tried to drive a van parked on the roadside without the driver knowing, the van crashed into an electric pole, a signal pole, a bicycle and shops, causing extensive damage.
The incident took place on Saturday on the main market road under the Kalmunai Police Headquarters in Ampara District.
A trader had brought vegetables to the market in the van and left the van there due to another job.
At that time, the 16-year-old boy stole the keys of the van and drove the vehicle when the accident occurred.
During this, the van crashed into an electric pole, a signal pole belonging to the Road Development Authority, goods from shops, a bicycle and many other things.
The 16-year-old boy who caused the accident has since surrendered at the nearby Kalmunai Headquarters Police Station.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Kalmunai Headquarters Traffic Police.
The owner of the van has stated that the boy in question had stolen the keys to his van without his knowledge.
