The government has distributed 19 fishing boats to affected fishermen in Trincomalee District under a Rs. 1.3 million relief initiative following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
Nineteen fishing boats were distributed to fishermen in Trincomalee District yesterday as part of a government relief effort targeting those whose livelihoods were severely disrupted by Cyclone Ditwah in the previous year. The handover ceremony took place at the Trincomalee District Secretariat, with District Secretary W.G.M. Hemanta Kumara overseeing the event alongside Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar, who officially presented the vessels to their recipients.
The initiative, funded through a Rs. 1.3 million financial allocation, was designed to address the substantial losses incurred by local fishermen during the cyclone. Many beneficiaries had lost boats and essential fishing equipment, creating significant economic hardship for their families and communities. Officials stated that the distribution of replacement boats is intended to help these fishermen resume their fishing activities and gradually rebuild their economic stability.
