Police arrested a young man at Bandaranaike International Airport with over 10,000 foreign cigarettes believed to have been illegally imported into Sri Lanka.
A 22-year-old resident of Uhumiya was taken into custody at Bandaranaike International Airport on Wednesday following the discovery of a large quantity of foreign cigarettes in their possession, according to the Police Narcotics Bureau.
Officers from the PNB's Katunayake Airport Sub-Unit conducted an operation at the airport's arrival terminal after receiving intelligence about the suspected smuggling activity. During inspection procedures, authorities recovered 54 cartons containing approximately 10,800 cigarette sticks that are alleged to have been brought into the country in violation of import regulations.
The Police Narcotics Bureau has assumed responsibility for further investigation into the matter, examining the circumstances surrounding the illegal importation and the suspect's involvement in the operation.
