The National Water Supply and Drainage Board will cut water supply across multiple areas of Colombo and its suburbs for 24 hours starting Thursday evening to conduct essential maintenance at the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant.
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has announced a full-day suspension of water services affecting numerous residential and commercial areas across Colombo and its suburban zones. The interruption will commence at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and continue until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026.
According to the Board, the maintenance work at the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant is necessary for essential system operations. NewsFirst reported that the maintenance is specifically aimed at improving the quality and reliability of water services provided to consumers. The affected regions include multiple suburbs south and east of central Colombo, including Nugegoda, Kohuwala, Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia, Ratmalana, and Moratuwa, among others. Several central Colombo locations such as parts of Colombo 06, Havelock Road, and Kalyani Road will also experience the interruption.
The Water Board acknowledged the disruption this suspension will cause and expressed regret for the inconvenience to residents and businesses. Officials have urged people in the affected areas to prepare in advance and to conserve water usage during the 24-hour period. Residents are advised to make necessary arrangements to ensure adequate water supplies for essential needs during this maintenance window.
