Sri Lankan naval forces have arrested 36 individuals and seized 17 boats during coordinated operations against unlawful fishing activities across multiple coastal regions.
A series of coordinated naval operations between July 16 and July 31 resulted in the apprehension of 36 suspects engaged in illegal fishing, authorities reported. The enforcement action targeted unlawful fishing practices across several coastal areas, spanning from the Jaffna peninsula to waters off Kalpitiya.
Naval personnel from the Eastern, Northern, North Central and Northwestern Commands conducted the operations in multiple locations including Salpearu, Thuduwa, Pigeon Island, Sudaikuda, Alampil, Chilawaththai, and other coastal zones. During the raids, authorities seized 17 dinghies and one vehicle suspected of being involved in the illegal activities, along with prohibited fishing equipment and quantities of sea cucumbers.
The suspects and seized materials, including the boats and equipment, have been transferred to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources offices across multiple districts including Kuchchaveli, Cod Bay, Muthur, Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Mannar and Puttalam. The department will handle the subsequent legal proceedings against those apprehended.
