The Ministry of Defence has begun construction on almost 4,900 houses for families whose homes were completely destroyed by Cyclone Ditwah, while compensation for partially damaged properties has also commenced.
Reconstruction efforts following Cyclone Ditwah have entered an active phase, with the Ministry of Defence initiating construction work on 4,918 new houses designed for families who lost their homes entirely in the disaster.
According to Prageeth Danansooriya, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, the housing reconstruction programme represents a significant commitment to rebuilding affected communities. Simultaneously, compensation payments have begun reaching owners of 50,554 properties that sustained partial damage from the cyclone.
The dual approach addresses the varying levels of impact experienced across regions hit by the storm. While those facing total property loss will receive newly constructed homes, homeowners with repairable damage are being provided financial compensation to support restoration efforts. The ministry's coordinated response aims to restore housing stability for tens of thousands of families displaced or affected by the natural disaster.
