Wildlife officials have successfully extracted 47 turtles trapped in a dried-up well in Kantale, relocating them to the Kantale Reservoir as drought conditions continue to affect the region.
A total of 47 turtles, comprising 46 star tortoises and one flapshell turtle, have been rescued from a well that ran dry due to severe drought in the Kantale area. The rescue operation took place on Wednesday following a report received by the Kantale Wildlife Office about animals trapped in the parched well within the Kantale range.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation coordinated the extraction of the trapped reptiles and subsequently released all 47 animals into the Kantale Reservoir. The operation highlights the broader impact of ongoing drought conditions affecting the region, where water scarcity has created hazardous situations for wildlife populations.
