Construction has begun on 57 new houses in Kanaweralla, Passara, under Phase IV of the Indian Housing Project, which aims to build 10,000 houses for Sri Lanka’s plantation community. The foundation stone for the project was laid today (5) in the presence of Minister Samantha Vidyaratne and Consul General of the High Commission of India, Harvinder Singh. The project, implemented by the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure with assistance from the Government of India and the support of the Sri Lankan Government, will provide permanent housing for 57 families living in landslide-prone areas in Kanaweralla, Badulla District. Under the programme, the Government of India has allocated Rs. 2.8 million for each housing unit, while the Sri Lankan Government has allocated an additional Rs. 400,000 per house for infrastructure facilities. The initiative is aimed at providing safer and more secure homes for families who have lived under the threat of landslides for many years. Badulla District MP Kitnan Selvaraj, Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe, Badulla District Secretary Sunil Galagama and other officials also attended the event. (Newswire)
