A 65-year-old man died after being buried by a collapsing earth embankment in Nawalapitiya as heavy rainfall triggered flooding and forced the evacuation of nearly 140 residents from the area.

A 65-year-old resident of Nawalapitiya's Solankanda area died after being trapped beneath a collapsed earth embankment during heavy rainfall that has affected the Kandy District. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed the fatality through its Director Pradeep Kodippili during a media briefing on the ongoing weather emergency.

Beyond the fatal incident, the severe weather has triggered minor flooding throughout Nawalapitiya, prompting significant evacuation efforts. According to DMC figures, 138 people from 38 households have been relocated to safer locations as a precautionary measure against rising flood waters.

Authorities have maintained close surveillance of the situation as adverse weather conditions persist. Officials have issued advisories urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and exercise caution during the continuing inclement weather.
