Russia launched another large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine's capital and surrounding regions Tuesday, marking the sixth straight day of heavy attacks that have killed at least 12 people and wounded dozens more.
Russia conducted an extensive aerial bombardment targeting Kyiv and eight other Ukrainian regions overnight into Tuesday morning, according to local authorities. The assault resulted in at least 12 deaths, including an Indian national, and wounded more than a dozen others, with three children among the injured. This latest strike represents the sixth consecutive day of intense Russian air operations since last week, described by Ukrainian officials as an unprecedented sustained campaign aimed at disrupting civilian life and infrastructure since the full-scale invasion began over four years ago.
The attack struck residential areas and civilian facilities across multiple districts of Kyiv, with eight people killed in the city proper and three more in surrounding regions. A ballistic missile struck a railway depot operated by state company Ukrzaliznytsia, killing six of its employees. Ukrainian air defenses and emergency services mobilized nearly 350 workers to respond to the strikes. According to Ukraine's air force, Russia deployed ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, anti-radar weapons, and 218 drones, approximately one-third of which were jet-powered aircraft significantly harder to intercept. Damage also extended to the Odesa region on the Black Sea, where a textile factory caught fire and civilian infrastructure was damaged.
The Russian Defense Ministry characterized the operation as a "massive strike" using precision-guided weapons targeting military manufacturing facilities and defense infrastructure. However, the strikes heavily impacted civilian areas, with rescue workers clearing rubble from damaged residential buildings. The timing coincided with millions of Ukrainian schoolchildren returning to classes for the new academic year. Meanwhile, Russia reported that its air defenses intercepted 516 Ukrainian drones across 18 regions, Crimea, and the Black Sea. Ukrainian drone operations also targeted Russia's Ust-Luga oil and gas terminal, one of the country's largest export facilities located over 800 kilometers from Ukraine's border.
