The National Audit Office says that the Inland Revenue Department had to collect Rs. 2,164 billion in arrears of taxes in the previous year (2025).
The audit also revealed that the Inland Revenue Department had not collected Rs. 2,164 billion in arrears of taxes that should have been collected in the previous year (2025). The audit report also states that if that revenue had been collected in the year 2025, the budget deficit for that year could have been completely reduced.
The audit report also states that the delays in the collection of arrears of taxes by the Inland Revenue Department were due to deficiencies in the Revenue Administration Management Information System, the lengthy nature of the arrears tax appeal process, and the lack of a specialized court system to implement judicial proceedings regarding the collection of arrears.
