The Department of Meteorology has warned of significant rainfall above 75 mm in parts of the country, accompanied by strong winds and rough seas that may affect fishing and naval activities.
Heavy downpours are expected across several regions of Sri Lanka on August 4th, with the Department of Meteorology forecasting rainfall exceeding 75 mm in some areas. The Sabaragamuwa province along with the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts are anticipated to experience the most substantial precipitation, with showers and thundershowers expected throughout the day in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces as well as parts of Galle and Matara districts.
Wind conditions are also expected to intensify across multiple regions. Strong gusts ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour may develop over the North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces and Trincomalee district. The meteorological department has cautioned the public to take necessary precautions against potential damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning strikes associated with the thundershowers.
Maritime conditions are likely to deteriorate significantly throughout the day. Sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to become rough or very rough, with wave heights potentially reaching 2.0 to 2.5 meters along several coastal stretches. Naval and fishing communities have been advised to avoid venturing into the affected sea areas off the southern and eastern coasts until conditions improve. Windspeeds over some maritime zones could reach 60 to 70 kilometers per hour during peak activity.
Showers are also anticipated in the Uva and Eastern provinces and Mullaitivu district from mid-afternoon onward, with several spells expected in the North-central province throughout the day.
