A Kaspersky study reveals that half of Generation Z in Asia Pacific use artificial intelligence daily, with many treating it as a friend rather than a tool. However, researchers warn that users are not adequately protecting themselves against potential risks.
Generation Z has emerged as the most active users of artificial intelligence across Asia Pacific, according to research released by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. The study found that half of Gen Z respondents in the region interact with AI systems on a daily or near-daily basis, significantly outpacing other age groups. The primary uses centre on practical applications, with 57% employing AI for information searches, 54% for educational purposes, and 50% for idea generation.
A notable finding from the research indicates that artificial intelligence has transcended its role as a purely functional tool for many young people. Nearly a third of Gen Z respondents in Asia Pacific report using AI as a friend or companion, with particularly high adoption rates in Indonesia (39%), Vietnam (35%), and Thailand (34%). This pattern extends to more personal interactions, with 34% of young users discussing private matters with AI systems that they would hesitate to share with others. Vietnam recorded the highest proportion at 42%, followed by India at 37%.
Despite their comfort with AI technology, the research reveals a significant disconnect between Gen Z's usage levels and their security practices. While 45% of respondents report consistently implementing protective measures, more than half only apply safeguards occasionally. Malaysia showed particular vulnerability, with 54% of users applying precautions only sporadically. Researchers emphasize that users often underestimate risks associated with AI systems, which can generate inaccurate information and may retain sensitive data disclosed during conversations.
Kaspersky's report recommends that users develop safer AI habits alongside their technical skills. Key recommendations include verifying important information through independent sources, avoiding the disclosure of passwords and personal documents, and understanding data collection practices before using new platforms. Experts warn that the increasingly personal nature of AI interactions makes critical thinking and information verification essential, particularly for educational, financial, and medical decisions.
