AI Academy and Berlin-based Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences have partnered to offer state-recognised German degrees in applied AI and technological transformation through a model combining paid work with university study from the outset.
Sri Lankan students and professionals can now pursue German-accredited degrees without leaving the country through a new collaboration between AI Academy and Tomorrow University of Applied Sciences. The partnership will offer a Bachelor of Science in Applied AI and an MBA in AI & Technological Transformation, both awarded by the Berlin-based institution. The degrees will be available through AI Academy's incubator model, which integrates employment with education from the programme's beginning.
The work-study approach distinguishes itself by positioning paid employment and degree completion as concurrent rather than sequential pursuits. Students will work on actual projects for Sri Lankan and international companies while completing their university requirements, building portfolios and practical experience alongside academic credentials. This model contrasts with traditional education pathways where students typically study first and enter the workforce afterward. The MBA targets working professionals seeking to advance leadership skills in AI and technology, while the BSc focuses on applied learning for those entering the field.
The initiative places particular emphasis on industry engagement across multiple sectors including technology, startups, apparel, tea, tourism, logistics, and government. Students will participate in an annual APEX Summit to showcase their work to employers and investors, and all graduates must complete an AI project addressing community needs. Tomorrow University holds state recognition in Germany's State of Hesse, with its programmes accredited by international bodies including ACQUIN, FIBAA, and recognised globally.
Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe emphasised the initiative's relevance to Sri Lanka's development, noting that economic progress depends on individuals who can apply knowledge to solve real problems. The partnership reflects a shared educational philosophy between both institutions that challenge-based, work-integrated learning better prepares students for an AI-driven economy. The programme announcement is scheduled for August 24 at Hatch venue in Colombo.
