Two employees of the Galle Municipal Council have been arrested on charges of demanding and receiving a bribe of Rs. 5,000. An Income Tax Inspector of the Galle Municipal Council and a field officer have been arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. It is reported that the Income Tax Inspector in question demanded a bribe of Rs. 5,000 in order to quickly arrange the necessary documents for the payment of taxes due to the Galle Municipal Council for the installation of an advertisement board related to a paint sales company. Accordingly, the Income Tax Inspector of the Galle Municipal Council has been arrested on charges of receiving the said bribe of Rs. 5,000 through a field officer. A field worker of the Galle Municipal Council has also been arrested on charges of soliciting and receiving a bribe on the advice of the first suspect. The two suspects were arrested by the Bribery or Corruption Commission at the Revenue Inspector’s Office of the Galle Municipal Council at approximately 8.50 am on Thursday (25). The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption stated that the arrested suspects will be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court after proper investigations.
