Authorities have ordered the closure of all schools in the Nuwara Eliya and Hatton education zones due to hazardous weather conditions, with additional zones advised to assess local situations.
All educational institutions operating under the Nuwara Eliya and Hatton Education Zones remained closed on March 3rd as the region contended with severe adverse weather. The Central Province Director of Education Nayomi Hettiarachchi confirmed the decision to suspend classes across these two zones in response to the deteriorating atmospheric conditions affecting the district.
Beyond the mandatory closure order, school principals in four additional education zones—Kotmale, Gampola, Teldeniya, and Kandy—have been given discretionary authority to determine whether to proceed with normal school operations. According to Hettiarachchi, these officials are expected to base their decisions on real-time weather assessments specific to their respective geographical areas.
The move reflects efforts by provincial education authorities to prioritize student and staff safety during periods of inclement weather. Schools in higher altitude areas such as Nuwara Eliya, which sits in the central highlands, frequently experience weather-related disruptions during certain seasons.
