Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay has announced a special scheme to gift a one-gram gold ring to every baby born in government hospitals in the state. The Tamil Nadu government has decided to allocate over Rs 755 crore annually for this new scheme, named “Thai Maman Thanga Mothiram”. The distribution of these gold rings is scheduled to be officially launched on September 15, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai. However, the state government has announced that all babies born in government hospitals from June 22, the birthday of the current Chief Minister Vijay, will also be eligible for this benefit retrospectively. Under this scheme, all children born in government hospitals, regardless of the gender of the child, will be provided with relief, and mothers giving birth to twins or more children will also have the opportunity to own these gold rings without any restrictions. For this, the beneficiaries will have to submit documents proving their residence such as ration cards and voter ID cards. It is reported that 54 percent of the annual births in Tamil Nadu take place in medical college hospitals, 37 percent in district hospitals and the remaining 9 percent in primary health centers. Accordingly, steps have been taken to establish special safes with 24-hour camera surveillance and power systems in the regions for the safe distribution and storage of these valuable gold rings. The state government says that the main objective of this program is to make the government health service not just a place where the general public comes for a need, but a place of pride where the joy of childbirth can be celebrated with dignity.
