An investment consortium that includes prominent figures from technology and finance is nearing completion of a deal to acquire a significant minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, according to reports from multiple media sources on Monday. The group, led by Amit Bhatia—son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and former shareholder in English second-tier club Queens Park Rangers—is seeking to purchase roughly one-third of the club, with the transaction potentially valued at approximately £4.4 billion.
The consortium's membership reflects substantial capital backing, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin both reported to be part of the investment group. According to Sky News, the club's current owner Fenway Sports Group could make an announcement regarding the deal as early as this week. The reported valuation would represent one of the most significant valuations in football club transaction history.
Fenway Sports Group, which acquired Liverpool in 2010, has previously indicated willingness to accept external investment while maintaining operational control of the club. The substantial increase in the club's value during FSG's 16-year stewardship would be underscored by the reported transaction price. Neither Liverpool nor FSG have issued official statements regarding the reports at this time.
The potential investment comes as Liverpool undergoes a period of transition, following the recent departures of manager Arne Slot and forward Mohamed Salah. Additionally, Michael Edwards, the executive credited with instrumental roles in building the squad that achieved Liverpool's first English league title in three decades in 2020, departed from his position as chief executive officer of football at Fenway Sports Group in July.
