A Sub-Inspector at Ambalangoda Police Station has been transferred immediately as authorities launch a special probe into a disputed incident involving an arrested suspect that was captured on video.
The Sub-Inspector heading the arrest team at Ambalangoda Police Station has been transferred with immediate effect, following a special investigation ordered by the Inspector General of Police. The probe, supervised by the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Galle Division, is being led by a senior officer stationed outside the Elpitiya Police Division to which Ambalangoda Station belongs.
The investigation centres on an incident recorded in social media footage showing a man behaving disruptively inside the police station. The individual alleged that officers had assaulted his detained father. Police provided a different account, stating that the elderly man was arrested on the night of August 24 after being found wandering on a road while intoxicated and disorderly. According to police, the man attempted to flee during arrest, resulting in a fall that caused the injuries visible in the video.
The arrested individual was admitted to Balapitiya Hospital on August 25 by Ambalangoda Police Station officers. Following examination by a Judicial Medical Officer, he was produced before the Balapitiya Additional Magistrate, who ordered his release on bail. Police stated that further action will be determined based on the findings of the ongoing special investigation.
