Authorities have warned of dangerous wave heights and potential coastal flooding across multiple sea areas, urging maritime and coastal communities to exercise caution.
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has activated an Amber Advisory for elevated wave conditions affecting several zones around Sri Lanka's coastline. The alert, which came into effect at 4:00 p.m. on December 30, will remain active through 4:00 p.m. on December 31, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The warning encompasses sea areas stretching from Puttalam to Pottuvil, passing through major coastal zones including Colombo, Galle, and Matara. During the alert period, wave heights in these regions are expected to reach between 2.0 and 3.0 metres. Beyond the increased wave activity, authorities have also flagged the possibility of seawater inundation affecting nearshore areas from Chilaw to Matara via the western coast.
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has called on naval personnel, fishing communities, and residents in coastal areas covered by the advisory to remain alert and implement appropriate safety measures. Communities are advised to monitor official updates and follow guidance from local authorities during this weather event.
