Sri Lanka's Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an amber heat advisory for several provinces, warning that heat index levels could reach cautionary thresholds during daytime hours on Tuesday.
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre released an amber warm weather advisory on Monday afternoon, effective until 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, covering the Eastern and North Central Provinces as well as the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, and Monaragala districts. The alert warns residents that the heat index—a measure combining temperature and humidity to reflect how heat feels to the human body—could climb to 'Caution' level during daytime hours.
Authorities clarified that the heat index differs from actual air temperature measurements and is calculated by the Department of Meteorology using global weather prediction models. This index provides a more accurate representation of how environmental conditions will feel to people rather than raw temperature readings alone.
The warning prompted health and safety authorities to issue comprehensive precautions for the affected population. Residents are advised to maintain proper hydration, particularly in workplace settings where regular breaks in shaded areas are recommended. Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups, including elderly and sick individuals who require monitoring indoors. The public is also cautioned against leaving children unattended in vehicles and should limit strenuous outdoor activities, instead seeking shade and consuming adequate fluids. Officials recommend wearing lightweight, light-coloured clothing to minimize heat absorption.
