Another large shipping container has been recovered from a beach in the Rathgama area, marking the second such incident within as many days along Sri Lanka's western and southern coastlines.
A white shipping container approximately 40 feet in length washed ashore near Owakanda Junction in the Rathgama Police Division on Wednesday morning. According to Rathgama Police, the container is suspected to have fallen from a passing vessel at sea.
This discovery follows a similar incident just one day earlier, when another white container was recovered from a beach adjacent to a tourist hotel in the Induruwa area. Police believe that container, which was reportedly empty, fell overboard from a vessel in waters off Colombo approximately two days before it came ashore.
The consecutive recoveries raise questions about maritime safety and cargo handling practices in the region. While authorities have not confirmed whether the two containers are linked to the same vessel or incident, the proximity of the discoveries in both time and location suggests a possible connection. The findings underscore ongoing challenges with cargo loss in busy shipping lanes near the Sri Lankan coast.
