The Ministry of Environment has announced that preliminary work has commenced to clear and protect traditional elephant corridors connecting forest areas and sanctuaries in the Mahakanadarawa, Nachchaduwa, and Mahawilachchiya areas in the Anuradhapura District. According to the ministry, the Department of Wildlife Conservation, with the support of Anuradhapura District MPs, will identify wild elephant movement routes using GPS and satellite technology and take steps to declare them reserved zones through a gazette notification. The ministry said steps are also underway to designate the elephant corridor between Mahakanadarawa and Nachchaduwa as a sanctuary. The initiative aims to protect the natural movement patterns of wild elephants and provide long-term solutions to human-elephant conflict through scientific conservation measures. (Newswire)
