An appeal has been lodged in the Colombo Civil Appellate High Court challenging a District Court decision that rejected a DNA test order in a paternity dispute involving Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne.
A legal challenge has been filed in the Colombo Civil Appellate High Court regarding the Colombo District Court's refusal to compel cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to submit a blood sample for DNA testing. The District Court had previously dismissed an application for the test, determining that insufficient grounds had been established to justify such an order.
The case originates from a petition filed by airline pilot Rasika Sewwandi, who asserts that Karunaratne fathered her child. In her court proceedings, Sewwandi has sought a formal declaration of paternity and has requested that the Registrar General be directed to issue a birth certificate listing Karunaratne as the father. According to Sewwandi's account, the two maintained a relationship beginning in approximately 2023, after which Karunaratne allegedly declined to acknowledge paternity upon learning of her pregnancy.
Karunaratne has denied the allegations throughout the legal proceedings and has refused to consent to DNA testing. The appeal now moves the dispute to a higher court level, where judges will reconsider whether grounds exist to mandate the DNA test that the District Court declined to order.
