Apple's iPad Air is expected to undergo its most significant transformation since 2020, with reports indicating a new design and OLED display technology arriving in early 2027 as part of the company's broader expansion of advanced screens across its product lineup.
The iPad Air has maintained the same external design since the fourth-generation model launched in 2020, making it Apple's longest-running tablet design despite receiving multiple processor upgrades over the past four years. That extended run could finally end in 2027, according to industry reports, when the device is expected to receive both a redesigned chassis and OLED display technology.
Samsung Display is reportedly set to supply single-stack LTPS OLED panels for the updated iPad Air, positioning the technology between the entry-level LCD displays and the more advanced tandem OLED screens found in the current iPad Pro. The upgrade would align with Apple's strategy of gradually introducing OLED technology across more device categories, including planned expansions to the iMac and MacBook Air lines. The refreshed iPad Air is also expected to feature Apple's next-generation M5 chip.
Apple has demonstrated a pattern of coupling major display technology shifts with complete design overhauls. When the iPad Pro transitioned to OLED in 2024, the company simultaneously introduced its most substantial redesign since 2018, featuring a noticeably thinner form factor. A similar approach could shape the iPad Air's 2027 refresh. The upcoming iPad mini 8, expected later this year with its own new design and OLED display, may provide a preview of design elements the iPad Air could adopt, including a vibration-based speaker system and water-resistant casing.
While the iPad Air redesign remains unconfirmed by Apple, the convergence of timing, display technology upgrades, and design evolution across the tablet lineup suggests significant changes are on the horizon for the mid-range device.
