Sri Lanka Army personnel conducted rescue operations in flood-affected regions of Kotagala and Ginigathhena on August 3rd, relocating residents to safety as heavy rains persisted across the country.
The Sri Lanka Army rescued a total of 24 families from flood-affected areas in Kotagala and Ginigathhena on the afternoon of August 3rd, according to Ada Derana. Personnel from the 56 Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Kotagala responded to reports of residents trapped by rising floodwaters and successfully moved those affected to safer locations.
The flooding was triggered when the Hatton Oya river, which flows from Hatton towards Nawalapitiya, overflowed its banks. The overflow resulted in significant inundation of estate houses in the Ginigathhena Blackwater area. Four estates were impacted by the disaster: Ginigathhena Blackwater Estate, Hatton Kotagala Commercial Estate, Loghill Estate, and Mayfield Estate.
The rescue operation was part of broader emergency response efforts as heavy rains continued to affect various parts of the country. Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone regions to remain alert and adhere to official safety guidance during the ongoing adverse weather conditions. The successful evacuation ensured vulnerable residents were relocated away from danger as flooding continued to pose risks in the affected zones.
