A Ukrainian drone attack on an oil refinery in Russia's Tatarstan region has claimed at least 13 lives, including a child, marking one of the deadliest single strikes on Russian territory since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
At least 13 people have died following a Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan republic, according to Russian officials. The death toll includes one child, with an additional 75 people reported injured in what represents one of the most lethal single attacks on Russian soil during the ongoing conflict. The target was located more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
Ukraine's Armed Forces confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery was struck during the overnight operation, which extended into the morning hours. Ukrainian defence manufacturer FirePoint stated that its FP-1 drones were deployed in the attack. Russian authorities acknowledged that both industrial facilities and residential areas were targeted, with Moscow's Investigative Committee noting that civilians not involved in military operations were present at the scene. Ukraine has not yet formally commented on the strike.
Local sources documented the extensive damage through verified social media images showing substantial smoke plumes and flames rising from the affected area, with air raid sirens audible in the background. Tatarstan's regional head, Rustam Minnikhanov, confirmed the strike and extended condolences to victims' families, while Nizhnekamsk's mayor described the incident as causing "tremendous pain." A period of mourning has been declared across the region.
The strike reflects Ukraine's escalating capacity for long-range operations targeting facilities that Kyiv asserts support Russia's war effort. Russia reported that over 450 Ukrainian drones were intercepted by air defences during the night.
