The Dambulla Magistrate’s Court has imposed a total fine of Rs. 2 lakh on a wholesaler and a retail shop who pleaded guilty to selling Keeri Samba rice at a price higher than the government’s approved maximum retail price (MRP).
The cases were registered by the Matale District Office of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) following raids conducted at two business establishments in Dambulla.
In one case, a wholesaler in the Dambulla Special Economic Zone was found to be selling imported Keeri Samba rice with a maximum retail price of Rs. 255 per kilogram at Rs. 261 per kilogram.
In the second case, a retail shop in Dambulla was found to be selling locally produced Keeri Samba rice at a maximum retail price of Rs. 255. The product, worth Rs. 260 per kilogram, was being sold at Rs. 360 per kilogram.
After the culprits confessed to their crimes, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000 lakh on each company.
