While wearing seat belts has been made mandatory while travelling on Sri Lanka’s expressways, authorities have taken legal action against around 400 drivers and passengers who violated these regulations. The Expressway Traffic Safety Division said that special checks are being conducted at all entrances and exits of expressways to monitor whether the new legal procedure is being followed properly. Grace period According to the new regulations, which came into effect from the 20th of last month, it has been made mandatory for all persons in all vehicles travelling on expressways to wear seat belts. However, officials said that a three-month grace period has been given to vehicles that were not fitted with seat belts during production. Accordingly, the owners of those vehicles have been temporarily allowed to enter the expressways during this grace period so that the necessary facilities can be made. The Chairman of the National Road Safety Council said that this measure has been introduced to ensure the safety of passengers and reduce the risk of serious injuries in accidents on expressways. Meanwhile, officials have warned that enforcement of this law will continue throughout the expressway infrastructure and have urgently requested drivers and passengers to comply with the regulations.
