The schedule provides specific dates and timings for key rituals and observances throughout the New Year season, designed to be followed uniformly across all regions of the country.
According to the announcement, the new moon for the lunar year will be observed on Friday, April 9, while the solar year's new moon falls on Friday, May 7. The actual dawn of the Sinhala New Year is set for Wednesday, April 14 at 3:29 p.m. Prior to this, people are advised to engage in ritual bathing with herbal mixtures and religious remembrance on Monday, April 12.
The auspicious period, known as Punya Kalaya, extends from 9:05 a.m. to 9:53 p.m. on April 14. During this window, specific activities are recommended at set times, including the consumption of milk rice and mung beans, work commencement, and various transactions. The schedule further outlines subsequent rituals such as head anointing with oil on April 17 and setting out for occupations on April 21, each accompanied by prescribed dress colors, directional orientations, and herbal preparations.
The Sinhala New Year Auspicious Times Committee has prepared all timings according to standard clock times to ensure consistent observance nationwide. The recommendations include traditional preparations such as cooking sweetmeats and following specific protocols for beginning new work or business ventures during the designated periods.
