Australia's Special Envoy for Indian Ocean Affairs Tim Watts concluded a visit to Sri Lanka, announcing enhanced cooperation in dengue prevention, maritime security, trade, and disaster management, backed by AUD 7 million in support.
Australia has signalled a strengthened commitment to its relationship with Sri Lanka, with Special Envoy for Indian Ocean Affairs Tim Watts concluding discussions aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation across several strategic areas. During his visit, Watts met with government officials and civil society leaders to explore opportunities for collaboration in maritime connectivity, trade and investment, and regional stability initiatives.
The envoy witnessed the handover of two inflatable rescue boats to Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre and announced plans to provide disaster assessment drones to the National Building Research Institute. These contributions are part of Australia's broader AUD 7 million humanitarian and recovery package. Additionally, Watts announced AUD 2 million in development assistance funding specifically directed towards the Sri Lanka Wolbachia Project, an initiative designed to control dengue transmission following the recent surge in cases linked to Cyclone Ditwah.
Watts toured the South Asia Gateway Terminal at the Port of Colombo to examine Sri Lanka's role as a regional transshipment hub, underscoring shared interests in maritime security and economic connectivity. He also engaged with Deputy Minister of Mass Media Dr Kaushalya Ariyarathne to discuss collaboration opportunities in the media sector. According to the Australian High Commission, Watts emphasised that Sri Lanka represents an important neighbour for Australia in the Indian Ocean and that the partnership aims to support regional peace and prosperity.
This marks Watts' second visit to Sri Lanka, following a previous trip in October 2023 when he represented Australia at the Indian Ocean Rim Association Council of Ministers meeting.
