The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has paid tribute to retiring Court of Appeal Justice Rathanapriya Gurusinghe while continuing to advocate for his elevation to the Supreme Court, a recommendation that has remained pending at the President's Office.
Justice Rathanapriya Gurusinghe has retired from the Court of Appeal following a farewell sitting held at Court No. 205. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) marked the occasion by recognizing his three-decade judicial career, which began in 1996 and took him through multiple lower courts including postings in Colombo, Nawalapitiya, Gampola, Avissawella, Chilaw, Matara, Matale, and Kandy.
Justice Gurusinghe progressed through Sri Lanka's judiciary over his tenure, being elevated to the High Court in 2012 and subsequently to the Court of Appeal in December 2020. During his time on the appellate bench, he also served as Acting President earlier this year. The BASL commended his conduct on the bench, highlighting his dignity, patience, and fairness in judicial proceedings, as well as his contributions to judicial reform initiatives.
The BASL has reiterated its position that Justice Gurusinghe merits appointment to the Supreme Court, citing his "unblemished record of distinguished service." According to the Association, former Chief Justice Murdu Fernando had previously recommended his elevation to the apex court. The BASL stated it has reminded the President's Office on two separate occasions regarding this pending recommendation, underscoring what it views as his clear suitability for the position.
In its formal statement, the BASL wished the retiring judge health and contentment in retirement, noting that the respect he has earned through his years of service will remain.
