The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) convened a special general meeting on Wednesday to address concerns surrounding a government proposal to raise the retirement age for judges. The session, held at the association's Colombo headquarters, drew together BASL members to evaluate potential responses to the constitutional amendment initiative.

According to BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya, the discussion centered on broader governance principles rather than individual judicial officers. He emphasized that the association views the proposal as touching upon fundamental questions of judicial independence, constitutional integrity, and public trust in the legal system. The association's leadership characterised the matter as one of national significance requiring careful institutional consideration.
