Sri Lanka Embassy in Brussels and the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) had a  fruitful discussion on promoting science cooperation between Sri Lanka and Belgium with  a focus on prospective institutional partnerships. Ambassador Chandana Weerasena and Head of the Department of Federal, Inter federal  and international coordination at the BELSPO, Dr. Marc Vanholsbeeck, discussed the  opportunities and strengths of each side for potential future engagements at BELSPO  Head Office in Brussels on 06 July 2026. BELSPO is the leading agency responsible for science policy in Belgium, coordinating the  research efforts of all public authorities in the country. It engages in a wide range of  activities, from space research and applications to funding scientific research programs,  networking national and international researchers, studying the climate and funding the  Royal Museums. BELSPO also manages the Princess Elisabeth Station in Antarctica and  owns the Belgian oceanographic vessel RV Belgica II. The Ambassador and the team briefed the BELSPO officials on the immense potential  that exists for enhancing cooperation between Sri Lanka and Belgium in climate science,  maritime research and biotechnology and highlighted that collaboration in the areas of  science and innovation will contribute to mutual prosperity and set new benchmarks for  bilateral cooperation in the field of science.
