A homicide investigation in regional New South Wales has concluded after forensic examination revealed that a suitcase discovered on a roadside contained a lifelike doll rather than human remains, as initially suspected by members of the public who found it.
An investigation by Australian police into a potential homicide has been closed after authorities determined that a disturbing discovery near Oallen, a town approximately 200 kilometres southwest of Sydney, was not what it initially appeared to be. Two members of the public discovered an abandoned suitcase on a roadside during a Sunday drive and opened it, believing they had found human remains.
Police responded to establish a crime scene in the remote location. However, forensic examinations subsequently revealed that the item within the bag was a sophisticated doll rather than actual human remains. According to a police statement released on Monday, the object was equipped with realistic features including clothing, hair, and a nose piercing, along with markings that resembled bruises and grazes.
Superintendent Linda Bradbury explained the initial cautious approach taken by officers at the scene, stating that police typically avoid disturbing remains in their original position, particularly when dealing with adverse weather conditions. The doll's realistic appearance contributed to the initial assessment that it warranted a full investigative response. The discovery has since been classified as a false alarm, bringing the brief investigation to a close.
