A fishing vessel capsized off Negombo, resulting in the recovery of one body and the rescue of another fisherman, while search operations continue for a third missing person.
A fishing boat capsized in waters off Negombo yesterday, prompting a coordinated search and rescue operation by the Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force. The Ministry of Fisheries confirmed that one body has been recovered and another fisherman was successfully rescued and brought to shore, with the survivor receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
The incident initially involved three fishermen. Following the capsizing, joint operations between naval and air force personnel were mobilized to locate those missing and provide assistance. A Bell 412 helicopter from the Sri Lanka Air Force was deployed to support the extensive search efforts in the area.
While one rescue was successful and one individual was recovered, authorities have not yet provided an update on the status of the third missing fisherman. The Ministry of Fisheries also noted that during the rescue operations, reports emerged of several other fishing vessels experiencing difficulties in the same sea area, which required additional assistance from authorities.
