The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000 for students with special educational needs from low-income families, with 5,530 students identified as eligible across Sri Lankan schools.
The government has moved to provide financial support to students with special educational needs from disadvantaged backgrounds. According to a proposal included in the 2026 Budget, Cabinet approval has been granted to distribute a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000 per eligible student.
The initiative was submitted by the Prime Minister in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education. The government conducted an application process to identify qualifying students attending schools throughout the country, resulting in 5,530 students being deemed eligible for the assistance.
The approved measure aims to help support the education and welfare of students with special needs who come from low-income households. Necessary funds have been allocated to provide the monthly allowance to all identified beneficiaries.
