Sri Lanka's Cabinet has authorized two major contracts totaling more than Rs. 5 billion for the development of cardiac treatment facilities at hospitals in Trincomalee and Anuradhapura, funded through a long-standing partnership with Japan.
The Cabinet has given approval for contracts exceeding Rs. 5 billion aimed at constructing advanced cardiac facilities in two provinces. The Trincomalee District General Hospital will receive a new cardiac unit valued at Rs. 2,036.46 million, while the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital will see the development of a cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery complex costing Rs. 3,004.88 million, both figures excluding value-added tax.
These infrastructure projects form part of a broader health and medical services improvement initiative that began in 2018, supported financially by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The programme encompasses cardiac facility upgrades at multiple institutions, including the National Hospital in Kandy and teaching hospitals in both Anuradhapura and Kurunegala, alongside the two newly approved projects.
Following a competitive tender process aligned with the relevant loan agreement and JICA's procurement standards, the Cabinet awarded both contracts to Maga Engineering (Pvt.) Ltd. Officials anticipate that the completed facilities will enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities for cardiovascular diseases while expanding access to specialized cardiac care in the two districts.
