A car transporting five pilgrims headed to Sri Pada veered off the main road near Mohini Falls and fell into a canal late last night, though all occupants escaped unharmed.
A vehicle carrying five people on their way to Sri Pada went off the Nallathanniya–Maskeliya main road and crashed into a canal near Mohini Falls late last night. The group, consisting of residents from Vavuniya and Kilinochchi, had visited the Nallathanniya Police Station around 11 p.m. to inform authorities of their intention to visit the sacred mountain during the off-season period.
Police officers cautioned the travellers against proceeding in darkness due to poor weather conditions at the time and suggested they delay their journey until morning. As the group returned to their vehicle to seek accommodation, the car skidded off the roadway near the Mohini Falls area shortly after midnight and descended into the adjacent canal.
The vehicle carried three men and two women at the time of the incident. Despite the severity of the crash, all five passengers managed to exit the vehicle and escape with no injuries reported. However, the car itself sustained considerable damage in the accident. Authorities from the Nallathanniya Police station have initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
