The Central Bank of Sri Lanka is hosting a two-day digital payments promotional event in Jaffna this week as part of its nationwide initiative to encourage wider adoption of electronic transaction methods.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) will conduct a Digital Payments Promotional Programme in Jaffna on August 7 and 8, operating from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm at Cargills Square. The initiative aims to educate government officials, business owners, and residents about the advantages and accessibility of digital payment systems.

This event forms part of a broader CBSL campaign titled "Shaping the future through digital payments," which operates in partnership with financial institutions and payment system operators. Prior programmes have been successfully conducted in multiple locations including Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Dambulla, Kurunegala, and Trincomalee, with organisers reporting positive outcomes in building awareness and encouraging adoption of digital transactions.

The Jaffna programme will feature Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vethanayahan as the chief guest, alongside senior CBSL officials, District Secretary M. Piiratheepan, and representatives from banks, financial institutions, and LankaPay (Pvt.) Ltd., the national retail payment system operator. During the two-day event, participants will receive hands-on support from financial service providers to register for and learn how to use various digital payment options. Additionally, financial institutions and LankaPay will engage with local merchants to facilitate adoption of the LANKAQR payment system for retail transactions.

The CBSL has extended an open invitation to Jaffna residents and businesses to participate in the programme and benefit from expert guidance on digital financial services.
